Barbara Webster
1946-2018

Dr. Barbara Webster Desguin passed away peacefully Sunday, May 27th at the age of 72.

Working as a Nurse Practitioner, Barbara attended Medical School at a time when women doctors were still uncommon. Her husband, Dr. Jon Desguin, proudly supported her through school. Graduating from Michigan State University she taught medicine before researching Chronic Illness in Children. As a teacher she encouraged her medical students to stop and really look at their patient before diving into the diagnostics.

Dr. Desguin recognized that chronic illness didn’t just impact individuals. Working at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, she created programs to serve families of children with chronic illnesses so the families could support themselves and their child. Perhaps the most touching gift she ever received was a five-dollar fast-food coupon booklet from a mother who was already paying far more than she could afford for her child’s treatment.

Here on Cape, she served on the board of directors for Cape Cod Child Development and as the president of the board. She consistently sought to focus every initiative and program ever more directly on the needs of the children and families who counted on CCCD for support.

Children were her passion and drive. Every child she saw drew a joyous smile and a tiny wave. She loved to watch an infant’s hand flex, attempting to mimic the observed motion.

A loving wife and mother, she kept our family organized and was implacable facing down those who treated her family unfairly. She took time every day to make sure we understood how much she loved us through both her actions and words.

She was preceded by her husband of 46 years and is survived her son Andrew Desguin and her sister, Joan Hull.

Those who wish to honor and remember her are encouraged to donate to Cape Cod Child Development.

The Dr.’s Desguin agreed to meet at the flower shop once they both moved on and now enjoy a long-awaited reunion amidst the roses.
