Remembrances from Phil Coburn

First grade thru high school, we were inseparable. We helped each other with chores, so we could go play somewhere. We had sleep overs and played marathon canasta games to 5000 and played monopoly so much we knew the price of every piece of property with all possible numbers of houses and hotels. He came to my parents house on the Cape - I went to his parents on the Rye coast. We played pond hockey both on the ponds around Needham and in his back yard - don't forget to duck under that low branch! The best of friends, he would tease me about something, like a girl friend that I was sure I was going to marry but, of course, which he knew wouldn't happen. One time, when walking to school, I was so mad about one of those talks that instead of smacking him a good one, I pushed him all the way across the street into some bushes and stormed off to the high school, only to patch things up within 15 minutes. He was the first one with a driver's license, so we "doubled" often in the VW for lots of dances. We played soccer under "doc" Brock in 8th grade and continued to our senior year. Bob and I played the "running position" of inside, and we could run forever, delighting our coach and hopefully irritating the opponents.
